*OC refers to the Fortune 500 company Owens Corning in Toledo, Ohio and not be to be confused with Orange County, Cali. or the once popular tv show following the drama of rich overprivileged teenagers in aforementioned city.
My 10 week summer was a whirl wind of unforgettable people and amazing times. This past summer was my first experience in the corporate world where I was interning at OC (see asterisk note above) in their Global Information Services department. I worked in the Enterprise Data department and helped develop the people, process, and technology for data quality issue tracking. Sparknote version: my project was to enable the tool and process to do root cause analysis on data quality issues to improve the business user efficiency.
What was great about my internship was that it gave me a true Information Technology experience. I wasn't sure if IT was where I wanted to work because as much as I love technology, I love people even more and I had the preconception that IT meant working in cubicle staring at a computer screen a la Office Space. My time at OC proved that wrong and confirmed my desire and passion to work in IT. I absolutely loved all the people I met at OC and especially my fellow interns who made Toledo that much more exciting. We went to Ann Arbor, Cedar Point, Chicago, paint-balling, the Zoo, and restaurants...we went to a lot of restaurants.
After my 9 week internship, for my 10th and last week of summer, I flew out to Boston, Massachusetts to visit my family (I was born and raised there and moved to Cincinnati when I was 14) and to get interviewed for a different internship for next summer. It's been so long since I was in Boston, navigating through the train and the streets by myself now is a lot different than when I was with family. It was exciting but it definitely made me feel old.
This summer, short as it was, was probably one of the most life-changing experiences I ever had and I am excited for what the future brings and where life will take me next.
